Toward a Sustainable Society through Comprehensive Industrial Use of Insects.

BUSINESS SUMMARY

Ryukyu Insect Co., Ltd. was founded in Okinawa in August 2024 with the mission of promoting the comprehensive industrial utilization of insects. The company aims to address social challenges by harnessing the diverse potential of insects. In its early phase, the company focuses on utilizing insects as a food resource through the cultivation of edible insects and the development and sale of insect-based food products.

THOUGHTS ON FOUNDING

It is said that nearly one million species of insects exist on Earth. Yet, aside from a select few, most are treated as pests—eliminated at great cost through control and eradication efforts. However, in recent years, this perspective has begun to shift. More attention is being paid to the ecology and functional properties of insects (including invasive species), with growing interest in applying their potential to benefit human society. For over a decade, I have been a member of the nonprofit Edible Insect Science Society, working to promote awareness and education around insect-based food. Through this work, I have gained deep knowledge of how insects can be used as a sustainable food resource. After relocating to Okinawa, I felt a strong desire to give back to society by applying what I’ve learned. As one of the few insect-focused ventures operating in Japan’s only subtropical region, our company is committed to taking on bold challenges that are uniquely possible in Okinawa.

Originally from Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Currently enrolled in the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University (Ryukyu University).
Research focuses on the effects of insect-based feed on fish and the exploration of functional compounds found in insects.
