Oceanographic Radar Makes Ocean Safer and Richer

BUSINESS SUMMARY

Based on the University of the Ryukyus' experience in leading HF Oceanographic Radar technology development and its application in Japan, ORNIS will build a HF Oceanographic Radar network to collect data, and generate and provide useful data that match user needs.

THOUGHTS ON FOUNDING

Oceanographic Radar can provide real-time oceanographic data over a wide ocean area at a much lower cost and with easier maintenance than traditional offshore observations by vessels, buoys, or satellites. I have advanced the research and development of this technology and promoted its transfer through collaborations with universities, research institutes, and companies. As a result, around 50 radars have been installed in Japan. However, their use remains limited to individual purposes, and the data's potential for broader applications has not been realized, hindering further installations. To address this, we are building our own radar network, leveraging our low-cost radar technology and fostering academic collaboration to pioneer diverse applications.

Satoshi Fujii received the M.Sc., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degree in 1982, 1985, and 2000 respectively from Hokkaido University. He joined Radio Research Laboratory of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in 1985. From 2005, He worked as a professor in Faculty of Engineering at University of the Ryukyus, and is Professor Emeritus of the university. He is consistently engaged in research and development of HF oceanographic radar.
